What is microsuction?

Microsuction removes ear wax with a fine, gentle suction tube while the audiologist looks into your ear under magnification and bright light. Because usually no water is used, there is less risk of infection than with ear syringing or irrigation, and the audiologist can see what they are doing throughout. If there is a clinical need, for example if the wax is too wet, we can also use water.

Please use olive oil drops for a few days before your appointment: softened wax is easier to remove. If you have been using Otex or other wax drops, check the label: if they contain hydrogen peroxide, stop and change to olive oil, because hydrogen peroxide tends to make the wax wet, and wet wax is not ideal for microsuction. Oil-based drops are fine.

Most appointments clear both ears in a single visit. Our audiologists have ongoing NHS experience, including ear wax removal for children.

More than wax removal

Not every blocked ear is ear wax

Ear wax removal isn't just about removing wax: it takes ear expertise. As very senior NHS clinicians, ears are our speciality and we are experts in them. When it is needed, we can also:

  • Check your middle ear and eardrum with tympanometry
  • Test your hearing in our soundproof booth
  • Recognise the different types of hearing loss and when an emergency assessment is needed

Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency and needs treatment straight away. We work closely with ENT teams so that, given the urgency, you get the right treatment immediately. We have saved people's hearing this way.

Sudden loss of hearing, especially in one ear? Don't wait for it to clear. Call us on 020 8168 0188, or contact NHS 111 or your GP the same day.

Questions

What time are you open in the evening?

Until 9pm Monday to Thursday. On Fridays we close at 3:15pm.

Is this an out-of-hours clinic?

Yes. Our Edgware clinic runs out-of-hours ear wax removal appointments, until 9pm Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 9pm on Sundays, so you can be seen outside normal working hours. It is a private clinic, not the NHS out-of-hours service.

Are you open at the weekend?

Yes, on Sundays from 9am to 9pm. We are closed on Saturdays.

How much does it cost?

£60 per appointment, with both ears included. Evening and Sunday appointments cost the same as daytime ones.

Can I book for today?

Same day appointments are usually available. Check the booking calendar on this page, or call us on 020 8168 0188.

Do I need to use ear drops first?

Yes, please use olive oil drops for a few days before your appointment. Softened wax is easier to remove. Never use drops if you have an ear infection or a perforated eardrum without medical advice. If you are not sure, call us.

I have been using Otex. Is that OK?

Check the label. If your drops contain hydrogen peroxide, as some Otex drops do, please stop and change to olive oil: hydrogen peroxide tends to make the wax wet, and wet wax is not ideal for microsuction. If they are oil-based, that is fine.

Do you ever use water?

Usually not: microsuction removes the wax with gentle suction. If there is a clinical need, for example if the wax is too wet, we can also use water.

Can you test my hearing or check my middle ear as well?

Yes, when it is needed. As very senior NHS clinicians, ears are our speciality, so as well as removing wax we can check your middle ear and eardrum with tympanometry and test your hearing in our soundproof booth, for example if we suspect sudden hearing loss.

My ear still feels blocked. Could it be something other than wax?

Sometimes, yes. What feels like a blocked ear can be sudden hearing loss, which is a medical emergency. If we suspect it, we can carry out an emergency hearing assessment in our soundproof booth and, working closely with ENT teams, get you the right treatment immediately. If you notice sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, call us on 020 8168 0188, or contact NHS 111 or your GP the same day.

Where is the clinic?

At 96 Edgware Way, Edgware HA8 8JS. The entrance is via Spinelab.
